The Walnut Street PTO recently held the "Night of a Million Laughs" teacher variety show. Teachers and staff
played, sang, danced, and enjoyed entertaining the audience of over 300 people. The night was a massive success of "thrilling"
proportions!

Students received a snowy welcome from Mrs. Monetti and Mrs. Fairweather-Hayes at Cedar Grove Elementary School.

Superintendent Michael J. Ritacco greeted some of the 5th grade students participating in the Mobile Learning Environment
pilot program during a meeting on Tuesday. Mobile learning devices will be used by students in Hooper Avenue, Silver Bay,
and West Dover Elementary schools. Over 300 people attended the introductory meeting at Intermediate North where Dr. Soloway
explained how the GoKnow! software connects teachers, students, and knowledge thanks to a grant from Verizon Wireless.

Superintendent Michael J. Ritacco talks to some 5th grade students at Hooper Avenue Elementary during their lesson using mobile
learning devices (MLDs). The MLDs were provided through a grant by Verizon Wireless and allow the students to do research,
classwork, and other assignments.

The 13th Annual Deaf Awareness Day was held at Silver Bay Elementary on March 10th. Schools
with programs for Deaf children from across the state attended along with colleges that prepare teachers of the Deaf and interpreters.
Ms. Kokkalis's class lead the audience in the flag salute followed by Mrs. Breece's class singing and signing "You've
Got A Friend in Me."

Mrs. Mabie's Omni students from Pine Beach Elementary were selected to take place in a Rutgers University program entitled
RU27. Students wrote letters that were placed on a thumb drive and put on a glider called the "Scarlett Knight".
The glider made an historic underwater, trans-Atlantic flight from Tuckerton, NJ to Baiona, Spain. Students were invited to
attend a celebration at Rutgers in honor of the flight.

The Board of Education recognized students at the March meeting with awards for their personal, athletic, and academic achievements.
Included in the recognition were members of the High School North track team. see the rest of the award winners

Taylor Van Zile, a sophomore at High School South, has been conducting a community service project at several of the Toms
River Schools. She is collecting used sneakers and soccer cleats. The sneakers will go to Nike's "Reuse-a-Shoe"
program and the cleats will go to Peace Passers, both non-profit organizations.

Polar Express Day
First graders particitpated in Polar Express Day at Joseph
A. Citta School. They were involved in a variety of activities which included wearing pajamas for the day. Here are two first

Intermediate East Giving Tree
Earlyact Advisor Wende Goodall along with Amy
Sabatino, Make a Rocket Sweat Coordinator, and Guidance Counselor Leanne Moore organized a 'giving tree' for Intermediate
East students. Intermediate Staff generously donated gifts for many of our TRIE families.

High School North Performs Grinch
Toms River High School North's Nautilus
Theatre Company's cast and crew from their performance of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". The story was read by
three narrators while being acted out by members of the theatre company. Over 50 children watched this captivating performance.

Mrs. Wrath-Esposito's fifth grade class at Silver Bay Elementary School wrote and illustrated
a book titled First Rate Character Traits. Each student chose a character trait, wrote a story about that trait, and illustrated
their story. The book was published by Nationwide Learning and entered in Nationwides Learning's National Book Challenge where
it was a winner! Each student received a free hard cover bound copy of their class book. 
New York City firefighter Louie Cacchioli met with fifth graders from North Dover Elementary
School. Mr. Cacchioli discussed his experiences in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He stressed the importance
of teamwork and believing in yourself. 
Here are the S-P-E-L-L-D-O-W-N winners for Walnut Street Elementary School. These fourth
grade students took First Place and Runner-Up respectively. All participants won their classroom spelling bees to qualify
to compete for first place. All participants did a fantastic job. Congratulations to ALL of the S-P-E-L-L-D-O-W-N participants!

South Toms River Elementary students and staff raised $1031.00 for the American Red Cross Haiti
Relief Fund through a hat day for students and jeans day for staff.

A student at Walnut Street School, recently donated a large amount of her hair to Locks of Love.
Locks of Love's mission is to help children who suffer long-term or permanent medical hair loss. The student received a Certificate
of Appreciation from the charity for her generosity. In total, this Walnut Street student donated 12 inches of hair to Locks
of Love.

South Toms River Elementary students proudly presented their 2010 Winter Concert on January 21st.
The talented students in the fifth grade orchestra were lead by Mr. Vandenberge.

Students at High School East put on an outstanding production of "My Favorite Year."

Miss Kari taught students in Mrs. Slavin's STRE class to ice skate through the "snow" . A shower
curtain provided for the ice and shaving cream was the slip-sliding snow. No skates required!

High School South's David Correll was honored with a Gold Star Award at the February Board of Education meeting.
While serving in numerous capacities during his forty-three year career, Mr. Correll will always be remembered for his phenomenal
dedication and dynamic personality. His dedication was evident both in the classroom and in the many activities he directed.

Art Exhibit Twenty-one Toms River art teachers have
work on display in the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library. The exhibit features 2-D and 3-D works in the upstairs
gallery and showcases. The exhibit will be available for viewing during library hours through February 28th.

School Spirit Day Joseph A. Citta students and staff
wore their favorite team shirts as part of a school spirt day. Pictured are a teacher and student wearing the team shirts
for Superbowl rivals the Saints and Colts.

Students Study Alternative Energy O.M.N.I. students
all over the district are studying alternative energy. Pictured here are students from STRE. They just finished learning about
the power of the wind. Designing the best sail was the goal of this particular project. Students raced boats to determine
which materials, shapes and sizes worked best. With this knowledge, these students will go on to build wind turbine blades
to create a model wind farm.
